Have you ever wondered why it was that Jesus called certain people to follow him? Have you ever wondered whether some faithful people didn’t always answer when God called them? On this weekend that we remember the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our scripture lessons remind us of others who also were called to serve God. We are likewise encouraged to respond to what God would have us do and be as we lean into our lives of faith. With so much in the world that is tumultuous, we pray for peace and we pray to become agents of peace, of love, and of mercy.

We celebrate Christ’s baptism today, and in so doing remember the presence of the Holy Spirit and God’s encouraging word to him. In the midst of charged and challenging times, we can take comfort that with Christ, we know a new and different way forward. The path of love and peace still offers the healthiest, happiest way through life. But what do we do when it is so very hard to love some people? We love them anyway…
