The Deacons are launching our Dinner and a Movie series on Friday, August 11 with a brown bag showing of “The Mission”. We’ll meet at 5:30pm in the Dolly Fisher room, enjoy the movie while we eat, then spend a little time discussing the movie’s religious themes and message. The 1986 film stars Jeremy Irons as a Jesuit missionary in 18th century South America, and Robert De Niro as a slave trader who joins the mission. Both men ultimately fight their Spanish and Portuguese compatriots to defend the mission and its native population from slavery at the hands of the colonists. The film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
