Sunday Worship October 31, 2021

This Sunday…We are meant to be different.  In some ways, we might say “it is that simple,” but there is nothing simple about the commandment to love.  The lectionary this week leads us to read about the relationship between a woman and her late husband’s mother, and also to read how Jesus summarized all the commandments.  Then, we are asked to be different because of it.  We are commanded to be different because of living in a world not only of contracts and collective bargaining, but of covenantal love.  It is our choice and our privilege, and it is not easy.  Living “in the world but not of the world” takes the strength of community committed to being in covenant together, and how we do so in our church and in the rest of the world sometimes requires of us more conscious development of our talent to love.  Join in worship, in prayer and in song, as we grow together in faith.

Our covenantal relationships are with all the world’s people, and so we may look to the work of the Glasgow Climate Summit with hope.  Church bells have traditionally been used as warnings and churches around Great Britain are planning to ring out for climate.  The Ring Out For Climate Change campaign is being led by Edward Gildea, a Christian Aid climate campaign organizer from Essex (UK) who is asking churches to ring their bells at 6 pm for 30 minutes on Saturday 30 October as a warning of the climate emergency and to mark the start of the conference. He said: “We mostly associate church bells with the call to worship, weddings and very special national celebrations. But they also have another historic function: to ring out warnings. I believe the climate emergency is a time of real national crisis and I would urge all churches to ring out a warning and to remind the delegates of the urgency of the dangers we now face.”  So, if anyone would like to join at 6:00 tonight, Saturday October 30th to ring our bell for 30 minutes, come on over to the church!  We will let our bells be our voice for climate justice in Glasgow!  Pastor Lisa will be there and anyone is welcome to take a turn!
